Fading
like the blush from the rose
as dusk fades to velvet hues
of darkness.
the longing, fresh as warm
blood, drawn from wounds
refusing to heal.
the desire like hunger deep,
clawing at the edge of
desperate dreams.
the sun’s brilliant face,
slipping from heaven’s grasp
as day is relinquished
to Old Moon.
hand as he leads me into the other
world, that place where the me
I know is greater than any sorrow.
stronger than my sense of loss,
his voice whispers that my will can
move me beyond the harsh color of pain
as he places a clean brush in my hand,
pointing me to tomorrow’s blank canvas.

Thank you. I am coming of age at last in understanding pain and sorrow not as enemies or torturers but as sometimes companions that walk with me during hard times trying not to destroy me, but rather allow me to be just who and what I am until I can stand on my own again. It is sometimes a delicate balance to not make them constant companions but still allow ourselves their kinship when we need it.

Have you ever read Hind’s Feet on High Places by Hannah Hunnard? It’s a really old book – very short, but follows the journey of Much Afraid – it’s a sort of Pilgrim’s Progress. I first read it in my teens and rediscovered it fairly recently. Here’s a quote:
“He answered gently, ‘It is so sharp that it slips in very quickly. But, Much-Afraid, I have already warned you that Love and Pain go together, for a time at least. If you would know Love, you must know pain too.”

No but thanks for the suggestion. I will look it up! It sounds wonderful, like The Little Prince which I devoured in an evening.

I love that book. I first read it when I was 17 during my A level French course. I recently re read it in both French and English and will reread over and again. I believe they’re making a film …
